What is Speech Therapy?
How to access Speech Therapy?
Speech and language therapy is a form of medical rehabilitation provided by a certified expert in speech, language, and communication. Adult neurological speech therapy is specifically targeted at communication and/or swallowing difficulties resulting from illness or injury—such as a stroke or traumatic brain injury (TBI).
The goal of speech and language therapy is to promote an individual’s capacity for reciprocal, meaningful communication. As such, therapy focuses broadly on the rehabilitation and development of overall communication skills, rather than solely on speech production.
Therapy is goal-oriented, and the active involvement of close family members and everyday communication environments is often essential in achieving successful outcomes. Therapy goals are always established in collaboration with the client and their support network, and the therapeutic approach is holistic and client-centered.
Speech and language therapy is medical rehabilitation. It is typically initiated with a guarantee of payment provided by the Social Insurance Institution of Finland (Kela), The wellbeing services county (Hyvinvointialue, e.g. Varha), or in some cases, a private insurance provider.
If you believe speech therapy may be beneficial for you or someone you support, we encourage you to discuss the need with your physician. You are also welcome to contact us directly for more information.
Support for family members
Changes in communication and functional abilities bring worry, uncertainty, and practical challenges. The situation can become a significant crisis for family members as responsibilities increase, the future can feel uncertain, and maintaining one's own well-being can be difficult.
Support from a trained professional helps you understand the changed life situation, strengthens your resources, and provides new ways to cope with everyday challenges. This support benefits both the person affected by the illness or injury and their family members.
Puheklinikka offers support sessions for family members of adults living with neurological conditions.
The purpose of the support sessions is to:
Clarify your own situation
Find concrete strategies to support your well-being
Strengthen your ability to adapt to a changed daily life
Sessions are led by Annemari Hongell, a speech-language therapist with additional training in cognitive brief therapy techniques.
You do not need a referral to access the sessions. The program includes 4–6 sessions, with content tailored to individual needs. Sessions can take place in Turku or remotely, in Finnish or Swedish.
Price: €50.00 / 60 minutes (self-funded, 2025)
